  1. What a Nice Surprise

Posted by hippiekarl on 2nd Oct 2015

So I ordered my Airline Lap Steel on Monday; Tuesday it was clearing customs in Kentucky, Wednesday afternoon I received it in the desert in Nevada. ~Amazing~ for an 'International Order', and a very modest shipping charge. My lap steel arrived almost in tune (halfway between open D and E). They included a string-crank, 90degree 'courtesy' 1/4" cord, 2 Allen wrenches (one for the bridge saddles, and a bigger one that would turn a truss-rod if this instrument had one), and a generous garnish of various thicknesses and colors of flatpicks. The strings are a little mushy and slack in open D tuning, OK for open E....but there was no indication in the packaging of the strings' gauges. I'm going to order a GHS Open G set (They make them, but nobody seems to carry them), tune it to D, and have a good tension on this neck. The set-up intonation is pretty good; it's in the range where I can fix a semi-tone flat by just bearing down with the bar a little. The pickup's pretty chimey for a HB, and there's more range on the tone pot than I expected. I keep the volume dimed, and use a volume pedal (my steel A/Bs with my guitar into a pedalboard). It sounds fine with OD or distorto. I wish they'd have mentioned the string set these ship with, but I imagine most of us are going to put on strings for the tuning we have in mind anyway. This is a fine lap steel, for the price ~especially~, and all you may need is a slide-bar, strings appropriate to your tuning, and maybe fingerpicks. I can't believe how fast my order was processed and shipped, either.

  2. Airline Lap Steel Delivers Great Tone

Posted by Larry Wright on 12th Sep 2014

I am in my first yr of lap steel, after 60-plus yrs of playing guitar. This is my second lap steel. I was disappointed
that it had no gig bag and the strings were poor quality and
too light. I changed the strings to Morrell E .014s, greatly
enhancing tone and playability. Intonation is adjustable, but
it is pretty much spot on. The guitar came tuned and seemed
to have been "tech'ed." Red finish is really nice, one small ding.
I would put the patch cord out the side vs on top. Biggest plus, it sounds great !
